Evening Restorative Workshop Series with Sarah Norris

The third Thursday of each month, from January through April, this evening restorative workshop will offer a gentle asana practice with hands-on assists. Practicing passive stretches, deepening our breath, utilizing props, and staying in these poses for longer helps to release protective holding patterns and to relieve dense connective tissue and muscular adhesions. This very clear, clean time opens us to greater receptivity, tenderness, and listening. It also enhances balance of our whole selves--physical, energetic, mental, and emotional--by supporting the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") nervous system. Students will leave in a state of deep relaxation, prepared for blissful sleep.

$100 for all four; $30 for individual sessions

Liz Workman Mead received her Masters at Columbia and has been an educator for fifteen years. While teaching high school History in the inner city of New York, she began leading yoga classes after school and offering alternative dietary affordable diets. Yoga and better nutrition helped her students overcome emotional obstacles and fall in love with their lives again. Thus motivated by her experience, she received certification from Laughing Lotus yoga studio in New York City. She then went on to receive her nutrition degree with Purchase college associated with Integrative Institute for Nutrition and her Ayurveda Wellness degree with the Sevanti Wellness Center. Liz combination of education gives her the perspective to relate to all ages and backgrounds.

  • The question we will be exploring in this 2 hour workshop: How is the way you are in relationship to others and your life showing up in your body?
  • Nourish & restore your bodies and your partnerships as you explore resting, stretching and massaging with intentional touch. Nick and Celeste will lead a partner grounding sequence, followed by some partner calibration skills then easing into therapeutic acro yoga postures and winding down our practice with some restorative thai yoga massage techniques.

Join Chris Byford and Adrian Larbi-Cherif for a two hour workshop focused on building a meditation practice from the foundation of your yoga practice. Chris will lead you through power flow poses to heat up your body and Adrian will settle you into deep stretchy poses. Both will help remove the physical resistance that occurs when trying to settle into your meditation seat.

Students will learn the connections between yoga and meditation and several meditation techniques. Sound + Restore with Ann Sensing

How we move is just as important as how much we move. Ignite awareness through gentle movement as we mindfully explore the natural tendencies of the body with the healing power of sound. By engaging the parasympathetic nervous system, we will tune in to the sense of the body, or embodied self-awareness, in order to have an authentic experience of the body as strong, supple, and adaptable. Experience the perfect blend of sound and soma in which the practice of attention regulation promoted by slow movement combines with the body's readiness to direct its resources toward healing. By actively listening, feeling, and observing the body in motion, we turn on to what we need and better ready ourselves for self-healing. Engage in this soulful, multi-sensory movement experience as a way to drop out of the mind to instead befriend and enjoy ease in the body. With opportunities for stillness, we will also explore sound as a way to further relax and restore. Benefits include decreased alienation from the body, feeling joyful, and facilitating gentle understanding, self-compassion, and emotional healing.

 

Class Structure:

We will begin by acquainting ourselves with our current states of mind and gently tapping into how we are feeling through a brief guided somatic meditation (in-depth body scan). Then we will slowly start warming up the body through gentle, intentional movement. Once we have centered breath and body, we will practice aligning the physical and mental through the combination of restorative postures and stillness with the accompaniment of sound. We will end with an extended savasana. Mindfully move, relax, restore, and allow yourself the time and space to heal.

About Chant Ram and kirtan:

Chant Ram is a kirtan band featuring Kenneth Robinson (vocals and guitar), Michelle Hall (vocals), Jess Lawton (vocals), Matt Kerske (percussion), Adrian Larbi-Cherif (bass), James Weinberg (harmonium), and Greg Martin (violin) . Their style is groove-driven, percussive bhakti rock. 

 

Kirtan is the chanting of sacred mantras.
It’s like prayer. It’s like rock and roll.
You can listen. You can sing. You can dance.

At its heart, kirtan is a form of worship--
celebratory, devotional, ecstatic.
At one level, it is the chanting of Hindu names for God.
At another level, it is the sounding of mantras
that activate the highest energies within us--
love, courage, connection, faith, spiritual vision.

Much of kirtan is call-and-response:
The lead singer chants a phrase,
and the participants sing the reply.
It is a sharing between performers and participants
that allows pleasure and joy to guide us to
beauty and inner stillness.
The point is not musical perfection,
it is immersion in a community of song.

Kirtan can be a refuge in times of trouble.
In the Ramayana, it is said,
“When all is in ruins, chant Ram.”
I take that to mean that when we are broken,
the vibrations of these chants can return us
to the rhythms of love.
